Degree Project: Animation (1)

Linework 1

After creating all the character designs and storyboard, I started to work on the actual animation, starting with the linework. I created everything using Procreate and Procreate Dreams.

These three scenes were created in early March.

First scene:

I tried to work on the scenes of the main character in the room first. My method was to place the original design of the character in drawing of the room, and change the scale of the character to fit the size. Then I draw a sitting pose of her based on the original drawing. I also cropped her arm and rotate it to make it looks like she is holding the brush and painting.

I tend to draw the first and the last frames of an animation first, then I keep drawing the in-betweens of the animation or the pose until the animation looks smooth and "make sense" to me.

In this video you can also see that I drew a new design of the room. The reason why I did this is because I thought the first one with a big canvas and stand in the corner is a bit too simple, not detailed and the angle was not easy to animate. So, I recreated the room and changed the angle of the perspective to make it easier to animate the 2D characters. It's also easier to animate the door of the balcony when it is flat.

Second scene:

Here is the second scene that I animated. I tried to make a closer and an angled one which is kind of similar to my storyboard, the only thing changed is the canvas size and the character is now sitting on aa chair. I roughly coloured the background, because I was a bit struggled with the angle/perspective of the scene, it helped me to get a better sense to draw and aniamte the character. The scene is very simple, the character is painting on the canvas. Basically a close up shot for the first scene to give a better understanding for the audience of what she is doing.

Third scene:

After creating the animation of the close up of the character, I created two of these short close up animations of the character using the brush.

I recorded my hand holding the Apple pencil in different poses and rotoscoped. I did not fully rotoscoped the whole movement, I only picked a few frames to rotoscope, then drew the in-betweens, for the movements in these animations are mostly dragged and rotated in the app.
